In the spring of 2023, a new cycle route in France will be finalised: A Journey to Brittany. This 500-kilometre route takes you in six stages, straight through Brittany along beautiful coastal strips and through beautiful nature. Do you like to go on a cycling holiday and do you like France? Then this is definitely a cycling route you want to look at!
Cycling from Nantes to Mont Saint-Michel
A Journey to Brittany begins in the artsy city of Nantes. From here you cycle to beautiful Saint-Nazaire, one of my favorite places in Loire Atlantique. Enjoy the beautiful coastline here, from the long sandy beaches overlooking the famous shipyards of this important port city.
The journey continues to the chic resort of La Baule, Pornichet and Guérande. Places where you will certainly not get bored after a day of cycling. Whether you like beautiful bays, cozy restaurants, medieval towns with intact city walls or a view of vast salt marshes; you will find it all in this region.
From Pénestin, the route goes inland towards La Roche-Bernard and Redon. You largely follow the river Vilaine here, which is of course wonderful, especially with higher temperatures. A stopover on the river side with your feet in the water, a packed lunch… Could it be better?
Via Messac and the university town of Rennes, the route takes you to Saint-Malo, the walled “pirate city” along the coast in northern Brittany. In Cancale, waar je overheerlijk oesters kunt eten, komt het einde van de A Journey to Brittany fietsroute in zicht: Mont Saint-Michel.
Travel part of the route by train
Is 500 kilometers by bike a bit too much? No problem, because certain parts of the route can also be traveled by train. You can take the train in Saint-Nazaire, Nantes, Rennes and Saint Malo, among others. The fact that the bicycle can travel for free on a regional train route in France is a bonus!

By the way, did you know that you can travel very well to Nantes by train? The Thalys* will first take you to Paris, then you can continue your journey to Nantes with the TGV inOUI. Ideal if you want to cycle A Journey to Brittany; you can get on and drive off immediately upon arrival at the station in Nantes.
